I should also point out that you can't ping your own site.

Also, if you post a message which can't be viewed by *guests* (not members, I mean guests), the ping won't work. When the other server tries to check your page it won't be able to see the link, and so the ping will be rejected.

(You can ping other conversation on the same server, but you can't ping anything in the same conversation.)
